This is a photo taken, from a windown of my room looking out, when I was inside the house of my African family who kindly hosted me when I stayed there. The kids belong to the same huge family adopting me. Without spending much time with them through the years, we who are from outside their world may think "They are so poor that they need to ride a bike." In my observation, though, they're like the normal children who enjoy their childhood and mingle with their counterparts, something seemingly ordinary but would not be what we put into consideration
shall we not give ourselves such a chance to interact with them.
Therefore, when friends of mine say "Oh, Hope, how sad that when you are working as an interpretor, a part of your work, you can only go somewhere outside Taiwan to work, instead of sightseeing." I do not feel I am working. Instead, I label myself as a person learning from different cultures at a very different time zone leading to completely different customary behavioral patterns which I tend to respect highly
and learn from their best parts to make myself a better human being.
這張照片是我在非洲當地停留期間，由非洲家庭成員熱情接待時，
在他們家中的一個房間裡由一扇室內窗口拍下的室外照片。
照片中的孩子們，是那個接納我的偌大家庭之中的成員。
若非多年相處而對他們有著進一步的了解，身處他們世界之外的我們可能會想：
「他們是不是因為很窮，所以才需要騎腳踏車？」
固然腳踏車的本身也有一段耐人尋味的故事，然而以我的觀察來看，
這些孩子就像任何膚色的孩子一樣，享受著童年，
和同伴們一起玩耍而交流。這些平凡的日常畫面，
其實是我們若沒有給自己機會走進他們的生活、與他們交流，
就未必能真正一窺究竟。
因此，當朋友對我說：「喔，Hope，真可惜，當妳身為隨行直譯人員，只能侷限在台灣以外的某個地方的工作中，都沒有玩到……」
但我卻不覺得自己在「工作」。
相反地，我更把自己視為一個在不同文化中學習的人。
在完全不同的時區裡，人們有著截然不同的日常習慣與行為模式，
而我傾向極度尊重這些文化差異，並從其中最美好的部分加以學習，
讓自己成為更好的人。
