活動型式:西方文化中流行的POTLUCK PARTY(即每位參與者攜帶一樣食品)

### **Background and the Story Behind the Event**

This summer, a group of outstanding Taiwanese friends visited, revisited, and volunteered in Kenya. Their efforts deeply moved the local community. Upon returning to Taiwan, we were honored to meet the mentor of one of these remarkable participants—a compassionate teacher whose patience and dedication transformed the behavior of a once-rebellious student.

In addition, our friends in Indonesia, who have been engaged in long-term service work there, were touched by these reports and heartfelt stories. After learning more details through HOPE’s sharing, they sincerely invited Taiwanese friends to join a **service and sightseeing journey** during the 2026 winter break.

Many people might consider such a trip to be an “international volunteer experience.” However, for those who have **never participated** in such journeys before, it might be more suitable to begin from a *sightseeing perspective*—to travel with an open heart, just as one would when visiting any other destination, while also observing and understanding the local way of life.

Later, upon revisiting, one may—depending on personal or family circumstances—choose to focus efforts on issues such as poverty, conservation, or education. Experiencing firsthand how disparities in wealth or access to knowledge affect people in different regions can be deeply eye-opening.

### **What Benefits Do We Gain from Such Experiences?**

Frankly speaking, “the devil is in the details.” There are countless examples—take one of our European friends, for instance. Though he could have easily pursued a career in Europe or America, he chose instead to return to Africa immediately after earning his university degree, engaging in engineering projects across various countries while also dedicating himself to charitable work.

The reason behind this? His parents, both of European descent, had worked in Africa when he was young. Having grown up frequently in and around the continent, he never saw poverty or disease as obstacles in life or work. This upbringing not only broadened his horizons but also granted him the freedom and confidence to navigate the world with ease.

Similarly, when we see former students—now professionals with families—demonstrating maturity, insight, and composure beyond their years, it becomes clear that such qualities often stem from long-term engagement in service experiences.

Indeed, the purpose of service work is neither to attract attention nor to escape hardship. If service itself carries a personal agenda, its true meaning may be harder to realize. Yet, in this vast sea of humanity, being steadfast without arrogance, capable yet humble—this inner cultivation, often difficult to gain through other means, is precisely the *unexpected joy* that service brings.
